Nothing says "we trust the robot" quite like handing it the keys, removing the human chaperone, and pointing it toward a Florida afternoon thunderstorm. That's exactly what Tesla just did in Miami, and somewhere a hurricane is taking notes.
No Driver, No Monitor, No Kidding
On July 3, Tesla launched fully unsupervised Robotaxi service in Miami — no safety driver behind the wheel, no monitor riding shotgun, nobody with a hand hovering near a panic button. The service zone covers roughly 20 square miles of core transit and commercial areas, and it's only Tesla's second major market outside Texas after April's Dallas and Houston rollout.
Notably, Miami skipped the training-wheels phase entirely. Austin ran a mixed fleet with supervisors for a while first; the Bay Area still requires a monitor onboard. Miami went straight to "figure it out, camera stack."
Camera-Only FSD Meets Florida's Weather
Here's the part that should make regulators sit up: this is the first commercial test of Tesla's camera-only Full Self-Driving system in a climate built entirely out of sudden tropical downpours, blinding sun glare, and soul-crushing humidity. That's precisely the combination that's already the subject of an active federal investigation into the system's performance.
Miami International Airport sits inside the zone too, though Tesla can't legally do terminal pickups yet — presumably because "autonomous car near active runways" is a headline nobody wants to write twice. The real test isn't the sunny-day demo laps; it's whatever happens the first time a rideshare passenger is doing 40 mph through a whiteout squall with nobody in the driver's seat.
Tesla's betting that scaling the map faster than the fleet — and faster than the weather cooperates — is a feature, not a risk. Ask again after the first rainy season.
