A Capsule Named Starfall Takes Its First Bow
On June 23, SpaceX launched the Starfall demo mission at 6:53 a.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral aboard Falcon 9 booster B1078. The payload was the company's new uncrewed reentry capsule, designed to survive a fiery plunge back through the atmosphere and deliver goods safely to the ground. Reentry is the genuinely hard part, and this was its audition.
Each capsule stands about 2.5 feet tall with a 10.2-foot diameter, weighs roughly 4,600 pounds empty, and can haul around 2,200 pounds of payload. Per the FAA environmental assessment, the stated goal is to demonstrate capabilities for the future transport and delivery of goods through space. The Booster Did Its Usual Party Trick
About nine minutes after liftoff, the first-stage booster touched down on the drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas, parked patiently out in the Atlantic. It was the vessel's 157th landing and SpaceX's 628th booster recovery overall — a number so routine it barely registers as news anymore.
That casual reliability is the entire point. Cheap, repeatable, reusable launch is the unglamorous foundation that makes genuinely wild ideas like space-based cargo delivery start to pencil out on a spreadsheet instead of in a sci-fi novel.
Why a Reentry Capsule Is a Big Deal
Starfall is a building block for two of SpaceX's larger ambitions: rapid point-to-point cargo transport and a commercial in-space manufacturing economy. If you can reliably bring things down from orbit, you can start making things up there that are actually worth the trip back down.
