Twelve tries in, you'd think SpaceX would run out of superlatives for "biggest rocket ever." They have not. Starship is back on the pad for flight 13, and this time it's bringing friends nobody's seen in orbit before.
The Super Heavy Booster Gets One Last Once-Over
SpaceX is targeting no earlier than Thursday, July 16 at 6:45 p.m. EDT for Starship's 13th test flight from Starbase, Texas, with a 90-minute launch window. The Super Heavy booster was rolled back for final checkouts ahead of liftoff — standard pre-flight caution for a vehicle where "test flight" still very much means test.
This mission debuts the upgraded Starship V3 hardware and will carry the first batch of next-generation Starlink V3 satellites, making it both a vehicle test and a payload test rolled into one very expensive dress rehearsal. It's also feeding directly into the Space Development Agency's next constellation deployment, which is riding on a Falcon 9 flight tentatively set for July 16 as well.
Why Flight 13 Actually Matters
Starship V3 isn't a paint job — it's the configuration SpaceX needs working reliably before Starship can credibly support Artemis lunar landings or the kind of Starlink capacity upgrades that keep the satellite internet business ahead of competitors. Every flight that gets closer to routine is a flight closer to Starship actually doing the jobs it was built for, instead of just making excellent live-stream content.
The part that doesn't get enough attention: stacking a new satellite generation onto a vehicle that's still proving itself is a deliberate bet that iterating fast beats waiting for perfect. It's worked for SpaceX before — mostly by blowing up publicly a few times first.
Thirteen has a reputation problem in most industries. In rocketry, it's just Tuesday — or in this case, Thursday.
