A Reticle-Sized Chip in Nine Months

On June 24, OpenAI and Broadcom unveiled Jalapeño, OpenAI's first custom-designed silicon — an inference processor built from scratch around the specific demands of running large language models. It's a reticle-sized ASIC, which is industry-speak for "about as big as a chip is physically allowed to get."

The headline flex isn't just the chip, it's the calendar. OpenAI says Jalapeño went from initial design to manufacturing tape-out in just nine months, which it believes is the fastest ASIC development cycle ever achieved in high-performance semiconductors. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan personally handed engineering samples to Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, the tech-world equivalent of a chef presenting a dish tableside.

Why Owning the Stack Pays Off

Tan claims Jalapeño delivers roughly 50% cost savings compared with the typical AI GPUs everyone's been fighting over. When you're burning compute at OpenAI's scale, halving your per-token inference bill isn't a rounding error — it's the difference between a sustainable business and a very impressive science fair project.

The deeper play is independence. OpenAI designed Jalapeño using its own understanding of how its models, kernels, and serving systems actually behave, with Broadcom and Celestica industrializing the thing into racks and networking. Deployment in gigawatt-scale data centers — alongside Microsoft and other partners — is slated to begin this year. That's a not-so-subtle message to a certain GPU vendor whose name rhymes with "indivia."

Jalapeño won't replace every GPU overnight, but it signals the era of one-size-fits-all AI hardware is ending. The labs that design their own silicon get to write their own future. Pass the salsa.
