Nvidia Just Bought Hugging Face for $12.9B. Yes, That Hugging Face.

Remember when Hugging Face was just a slightly unsettling emoji-named site where you downloaded a model, said thank you, and moved on with your life? Well, it just got adopted by the richest chip company on Earth, and the emoji is now worth about $12.93 billion.

The Deal: Jensen Huang's Latest Shopping Spree

Nvidia announced on September 3 that it's entered a definitive agreement to acquire Hugging Face, the open-model hub used by more than 18 million developers hosting over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications. The price tag lands around $12.93 billion, and more than 200,000 companies currently rely on the platform to find and deploy AI tools.

Nvidia is publicly promising to keep the platform open — developers can still pick whatever models, frameworks, and clouds they want, and "Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face." The deal still needs regulatory sign-off before it closes.

Why Everyone's Side-Eyeing This

Hugging Face has spent years positioning itself as the neutral Switzerland of the AI world — the place you go regardless of who made your GPU. Now its landlord is the company that makes basically everyone's GPU, which is a bit like your favorite indie bookstore getting bought by Amazon and promising nothing will change.

The "we promise to stay open" pledge is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Nvidia clearly wants Hugging Face's massive developer gravity to keep pulling workloads toward its own hardware and inference stack, open-platform branding intact. Whether that stays true once the ink dries — and once a few quarters of "synergy" pressure kick in — is the real story to watch.

For now, the open-source AI world's most popular hub has a new owner with very deep pockets and a very obvious motive.
