Every pair of smart glasses with a camera has the same tell: a little LED that lights up to warn bystanders "hey, this thing is recording you." Turns out that warning system had a loophole so obvious a toddler could've found it — start recording first, then cover the light. Meta just closed it.
The Loophole Was Hiding in Plain Sight (Literally)
Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, and Meta AI glasses were already designed to refuse to start recording if the capture-indicator LED was covered when you pressed record. But nobody thought to stop the reverse: hit record while the light was visible, then slap a finger over it, and the camera kept rolling with no visible warning to anyone standing nearby.
Meta's fix, now rolling out across its glasses lineup, makes the camera instantly cut out the moment the LED gets covered mid-recording, not just at the start. It's the company's second privacy patch in under two months, following an earlier update that shuts off the camera if the LED sensor detects it's being physically tampered with or destroyed. Meta is also running an ad campaign, including a Los Angeles billboard, explaining what the light actually means.
Wearable Cameras Made Consent a UI Problem
The entire premise of a "recording indicator" is that bystanders can trust it at a glance — the second there's a known way to beat it, the indicator isn't protecting anyone, it's just theater. That gap between "technically has a privacy feature" and "the feature actually works under adversarial conditions" is exactly the kind of thing that turns into a lawsuit, a PR crisis, or both.
It's also a preview of a problem that's about to get much bigger: as more companies ship always-on wearable cameras, "can a determined user defeat the safety feature" needs to be part of the design process, not a bug report that surfaces after a few million units are already on people's faces.
A blinking light is only reassuring if closing your eyes for a second doesn't make it disappear from the room.
