Google Hands Lawyers and Bankers Their Own AI Associates

Somewhere right now, a first-year associate who just pulled an all-nighter reviewing a 400-page contract is reading this through gritted teeth. Google just built an AI whose entire job description is doing that all-nighter for them — and it comes with a Google Cloud invoice instead of a stipend.

Two Industries, One New Platform

On August 25, Google Cloud launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal, a purpose-built version of its Gemini Enterprise platform aimed at law firms and corporate legal departments. Cleary, Freshfields, Weil, and Williams & Connolly are named as launch firms, using it for contract review, regulatory monitoring, privacy request handling, and compliance support, with confidentiality and ethical-wall controls built in.

Riding alongside it is Gemini Enterprise for Financial Services, currently in preview for capital markets and corporate banking. It ships with a Google-managed Financial Research agent, more than 50 specialized skills for financial workflows, enterprise data connectors, and a third-party agent ecosystem. Google says healthcare and life sciences versions are next.

Vertical AI Is the New Battleground

Generic chatbots that draft an email are yesterday's pitch. The real fight now is packaging AI with industry-specific skills, data connectors, and compliance guardrails that make it usable in fields where a hallucinated citation gets you sanctioned and a wrong number moves a market. That requires a lot more plumbing than a clever prompt.

This is also Google going deep instead of wide — carving out regulated verticals where Microsoft and OpenAI have been making enterprise inroads, rather than competing purely on general-purpose model quality. Expect "Gemini Enterprise for X" to keep showing up wherever compliance officers currently outnumber engineers.

The AI arms race has officially graduated from "write my email" to "review my merger agreement" — bill by the hour accordingly.

You don't need a Big Law budget to get real value from AI in your business — if you're trying to figure out what practical AI integration looks like for your company, that's a conversation we have every day.
