Feed It a Spreadsheet, Get Back a Movie

Alibaba Cloud officially launched Wan3.0 this week, its latest video-generation model, which can produce clips up to 30 seconds long — twice the length of its predecessor — directly from source documents. Feed it a Word doc, an Excel spreadsheet, a slide deck, a PDF, or even a Markdown file, and Wan3.0 turns the content into a finished video, no separate script-writing step required.

Pricing runs $0.05, $0.10, or $0.20 per output second depending on whether you want 480p, 720p, or 1080p, with a 30% discount running through September 23. Since its public beta launched August 6, Alibaba says the model has already been put to work on short dramas, ad campaigns, tourism promos, and music videos.

Timing That Isn't Exactly Subtle

The launch lands just days after Alibaba raised $10 billion in a share placement explicitly earmarked for AI spending — so Wan3.0 isn't just a product drop, it's a receipt. Investors handed over the money, and Alibaba is visibly putting it to work rather than letting it sit in a war chest.

The document-to-video pitch is also the more interesting part of this story than the raw generation quality. Every major AI lab is racing to make video generation look prettier; fewer are racing to make it useful for the pile of spreadsheets and slide decks that actually run most businesses. Turning a quarterly report into a 30-second explainer video is a genuinely different use case than "generate a video of a cat surfing."
