Sticking the landing is hard even when you're an Olympic gymnast, let alone when you're a 66-meter stainless-steel rocket coming in hot from orbit. Chinese startup LandSpace found that out the hard way last December when its first reusable booster turned into a fireball on the landing pad. Today, they're trying again — and this time they'd really like the rocket to still exist afterward.
Round Two for the Booster That Blew Up on TV
LandSpace is targeting a launch and landing attempt for its Zhuque-3 Y2 rocket on August 10, lifting off from the Dongfeng commercial space innovation pilot zone at Jiuquan spaceport around 7:45 p.m. EDT. Zhuque-3 is a 216-foot, methane-liquid-oxygen rocket broadly comparable in capability to SpaceX's workhorse Falcon 9 — same general idea of a reusable first stage that flies back and lands instead of becoming ocean debris.
The company's December 2025 debut flight got most of the way there: the second stage successfully reached orbit, a real achievement in its own right. But the first stage exploded in a dramatic fireball during its final powered descent, denying LandSpace the reusability milestone it was chasing. Since then, the company ran a successful static fire test in late June to prep for round two.
Why Everyone's Watching a Booster Try Not to Explode
Reusable rockets are the difference between spaceflight as a luxury and spaceflight as infrastructure — SpaceX proved that landing and reflying boosters can slash launch costs dramatically, and now China's commercial space sector is racing to prove it can do the same. A successful landing here would make LandSpace the first Chinese company to pull off an orbital-class booster recovery, a genuine geopolitical marker in the growing US-China space race.
What's easy to overlook is how unforgiving this technology is to get right — SpaceX itself spent years and multiple exploded prototypes before Falcon 9 boosters started landing reliably. One successful orbital insertion followed by one fireball is actually right on the historical curve for "hard problem, promising start." Today's attempt is less about whether LandSpace nails it on try two, and more about whether they're trending in the right direction.
Whether it sticks the landing or adds another highlight reel explosion, LandSpace is proving reusable rockets aren't just a Silicon Valley party trick anymore.
