The feature, powered by Google's Nano Banana 2 model, let users type a text prompt and generate photorealistic images layered onto Google Earth's satellite, aerial, and 3D imagery of real-world locations. Geospatial professionals reportedly found genuinely useful applications for it — but so did people generating and sharing screenshots that, per Google, "appear to violate our policies." Google didn't spell out exactly what crossed the line, only that it's pausing the feature while it builds "stronger guardrails."
Worth noting: the generated images never appeared in the main Google Earth experience and were watermarked as AI-made. That didn't stop open-source investigators and researchers from raising the alarm that fake satellite imagery of real coordinates could be used to fabricate evidence around breaking news events or atrocities in regions that are already hard to verify.
When Your Demo Doubles as a Disinformation Kit
This is the AI industry's now-familiar rhythm: ship the flashy feature, watch the internet immediately find its worst use case, pull it back within a news cycle. What makes this one sharper than the usual "AI made something weird" story is the substrate — satellite imagery isn't a meme template, it's the visual evidence base that journalists, human rights investigators, and fact-checkers actually rely on.
Watermarks are a nice gesture, but watermarks don't survive a screenshot, a crop, or a repost three platforms removed from the source. The gap between "technically labeled as AI" and "believed as real by someone doomscrolling at 1am" is exactly the gap Google just discovered the hard way, in real time, with a tool tied to the most trusted mapping brand on Earth (pun very much intended).
Google gets credit for pulling the ripcord fast — but the fact that this needed a public "oops" at all says the guardrails should've shipped before the feature, not after.
