China Catches a Falling Rocket Booster in a Giant Net

Somewhere in the South China Sea, a ship's crew reeled in the catch of the century. It weighed several tons, was on fire moments earlier, and used to be the first stage of a rocket.

The World's Most Extreme Game of Catch

On July 10, a Long March 10B lifted off from the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site, and instead of splashing into the ocean or landing on legs, its first stage deployed four hooks and was snagged by a net strung across the deck of the recovery ship Linghangzhe. Tensioned cables absorbed the impact, auxiliary lines locked the booster against wind and waves, and China became just the second nation ever to recover an orbital-class booster intact — and the first anywhere to pull it off with a net instead of landing legs.

It gets better: this worked on the rocket's very first flight, a first-try success that plenty of aerospace veterans would call borderline reckless if it hadn't, you know, worked. China's state-owned CASC says the recovered stage is already being prepped for a refly before the end of 2026, which will be the real test of whether this approach delivers the fast-turnaround economics it's chasing, rather than just a very expensive one-time magic trick.

Legs Are So Last Decade

The engineering trade-off here is genuinely clever. Landing legs, like SpaceX uses, add mass and mechanical complexity to the booster itself, weight that could otherwise carry payload or fuel. A net-capture system shifts that burden onto the ship instead, at least in theory freeing up the rocket to fly heavier missions per launch. Whether that pencils out in practice depends entirely on how fast and cheaply CASC can inspect, refurbish, and refly a booster that just got tackled by a net at sea, rather than gently walking itself down onto a landing pad the way Falcon 9 does.

The bigger story is what this signals about the reusable rocket club going from a one-member exhibition to an actual competition. For a decade, "catching rockets" was a SpaceX party trick nobody else could replicate at scale. Now there are two competing approaches on the table, and a second major spacefaring nation with the industrial base and launch cadence to iterate fast on its own version.

SpaceX invented catching rockets with drone ships and legs. China just showed up with a fishing net and said, effectively, hold my baijiu.
