Forget chatbots that write your emails — Anthropic just handed Claude a lab coat and pointed it at diseases the rest of the pharmaceutical industry has spent decades politely ignoring.
A Research Workbench, Not Another Chatbot Skin
Claude Science launched in beta on June 30, 2026, and it's built to be the single environment life-science researchers actually need instead of the fifteen disconnected tools they currently juggle. It bundles more than 60 preconfigured functions spanning genomics, proteomics, structural biology, and cheminformatics, plus 3D protein structure rendering, RNA sequencing evaluation, and CRISPR screen design, with access to Basecamp Research's EDEN dataset — reportedly the largest biological dataset in existence.
Alongside the launch, Anthropic is standing up its own internal drug discovery program aimed squarely at neglected diseases — the ones that don't attract funding because the patients who need treatments can't pay pharma-blockbuster prices.
Cutting Research Time Down to a Tenth
A UCSF epidemiologist reportedly used Claude Science to accelerate glioma molecular analysis down to roughly a tenth of the time it used to take. That's not a marginal productivity bump; that's the kind of number that changes how many diseases a small research team can realistically tackle in a career.
The neglected-diseases angle is the sharper move here. Anthropic isn't just selling software to Big Pharma — it's using its own program as a live test of whether AI-accelerated research can make economically unattractive diseases suddenly worth pursuing, and it's backing beta users with up to $30,000 in credits to find out.
If this actually works, "neglected disease" might finally stop being a euphemism for "nobody's coming."
