Loft Orbital's YAM-9 satellite is now running Google's Gemma 3 model in orbit, in what's billed as the first deployment of a vision-language model in space. Ground teams can pose natural-language questions about what the satellite is observing, and Gemma 3 processes both the query and the live Earth imagery on-board — no need to beam raw data back down for a server farm to chew on.

That last detail is the quiet revolution. Instead of dumping terabytes of pixels to Earth and waiting in a queue, the satellite reasons over its own imagery in real time and sends back answers, not just raw frames.

Why On-Board Brains Beat Downlinks

Bandwidth between space and the ground is precious, expensive, and frequently the bottleneck for anything an Earth-observation satellite wants to accomplish. Moving the intelligence onto the spacecraft means lower latency, dramatically less data to transmit, and the ability to flag a wildfire, a flood, or an illegal fishing vessel the moment it's spotted rather than hours later.

It's also a preview of where deep-space missions are heading. A probe out near Jupiter can't exactly phone home for instructions when the round trip eats most of an hour, so on-board autonomy isn't a luxury out there — it's survival. Teaching satellites to think locally is step one toward spacecraft that can make decisions when nobody's around to help.
