On August 30, 2026, at 7:26 a.m. EDT, NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, its 27 Merlin engines producing more than 5 million pounds of thrust. Both side boosters stuck their landings back at Cape Canaveral, because at this point SpaceX treats booster recovery like a formality rather than a feat.

The telescope itself is built around a donated Hubble-class mirror originally manufactured for a spy satellite, repurposed for a $4.3 billion mission that's now headed to Lagrange Point 2, a gravitationally stable spot roughly a million miles from Earth where the Sun's and Earth's gravity cancel each other out.

Why a Repurposed Spy Mirror Is Kind of a Big Deal

Roman's job is to conduct vast, deep surveys of the sky to study dark matter, dark energy, and exoplanets, essentially widening humanity's field of view instead of just zooming in further, which is what Hubble and Webb already do brilliantly.
