VENOM Takes the Stick
Under the Viper Experimentation and Next-generation Operations Model (VENOM) program — a joint DARPA and U.S. Air Force effort — modified F-16s began safety flights in June 2026, and by July, test teams let an AI agent actually pilot the aircraft in flight, with a human pilot on board to monitor and intervene if needed. An aftermarket kit lets pilots flip between manual and autonomous control mid-flight, literally with the flip of a switch.
The program builds on DARPA's earlier Air Combat Evolution (ACE) work and is explicitly a stepping stone: prove the AI can safely fly a manned jet first, then migrate the same decision-making into genuinely unmanned combat aircraft.
Testing on Something With a Human Already Inside
The smart part of this rollout isn't the AI — it's the sequencing. Rather than debuting autonomous flight control on an unmanned drone where a software bug just means a crash report, DARPA is proving it out on jets where a human can grab the controls the instant something looks wrong. That's the same "supervised autonomy" instinct that responsible AI deployment in any industry should follow: let the system prove itself with a human safety net before removing the net.
The goal, per DARPA, is faster tactical coordination across sensors, electronic warfare, and weapons systems in contested airspace — which is a polite way of saying they want AI making split-second decisions faster than a human ever could, just not unsupervised yet.
"AI flies the jet, human keeps a hand near the eject lever" is a pretty good metaphor for how most organizations should be rolling out AI right now.
