Somewhere in Beijing, someone at Zhipu AI looked at Cursor's pricing page, looked at Claude Code's pricing page, and said "what if we just... didn't charge that much." Enter ZCode, a free desktop coding agent that showed up this month with zero subtlety about who it's gunning for.

An Agent First, an Editor Second

Z.ai launched ZCode as what it calls an "Agentic Development Environment" rather than an IDE, and the distinction is the whole pitch. Instead of an editor with a chat panel bolted on, ZCode puts the agent conversation front and center, with the file manager, terminal, git panel, and a live browser preview arranged around it like accessories.

Under the hood sits GLM-5.2, Zhipu's new open-weight model: 744 billion parameters, 40 billion active thanks to a mixture-of-experts setup, and a score of 62.1% on SWE-bench Pro, which edges out GPT-5.5's 58.6%. The model shipped under an MIT license on Hugging Face with no regional restrictions, which is not a phrase you hear often from a Chinese AI lab.

The Price War Nobody Priced In

ZCode itself is free, but the real business lives in Z.ai's GLM Coding Plan subscriptions, starting at $16.20 a month and topping out around $144 for the "Max" tier. That undercuts comparable Cursor and Claude Code plans by a wide margin, which is exactly the point.

The catch worth flagging for enterprise users: GLM-5.2 API calls route through infrastructure subject to Chinese data law, a detail that will matter enormously to some legal teams and not at all to solo developers just trying to ship a side project cheaply.

Open weights, benchmark bragging rights, and a price tag your finance team will love — the coding agent wars just got a genuinely interesting new contender.
