Picture a 760-metric-ton rocket booster falling out of the sky, and instead of legs gently touching down like Elon Musk taught the world to expect, it gets scooped up by a net strung across a boat, like humanity's most expensive game of catch. That happened for real on July 10, and it happened in China.
How Do You Catch a Falling Rocket, Exactly
China launched its Long March 10B from the Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Center in Wenchang. About six minutes after stage separation, the first-stage booster fell back toward a floating platform at sea, deployed four hooks, and let a net strung across a waiting ship's deck catch it on the way down. The rocket weighs about 760 metric tons fully fueled, stands 5 meters wide, and produces more than 890 tons of liftoff thrust.
That makes China only the second country ever to recover an orbital-class booster intact — and the first to do it with a net instead of a powered landing on legs, which is the approach SpaceX has spent a decade perfecting.
Why a Net Beats a Landing Pad
Landing legs need extra fuel reserved for the burn, extra structural weight to survive the touchdown, and a lot of precision engineering. A net catch shifts more of that complexity onto the ship and the hooks instead of the booster itself, which could turn out to be a genuinely different, and possibly cheaper, path to reusability rather than just a copy of SpaceX's playbook.
China isn't just celebrating the catch, either — it's reportedly planning to refly this exact booster before the end of 2026, which is the detail that actually proves the concept works rather than just looking cool on video.
