Alipay Just Turned Every Storefront Into an AI Agent's Turf

Remember when "digital transformation" just meant getting a website? Alipay's latest move suggests the bar has quietly moved to "does an AI agent already know how to order for your customers." Welcome to commerce where the shopper might not even be human.

From Web Pages to Agent Skills

At a partner conference in Hangzhou, Alipay unveiled what it's calling China's first full-stack agentic commerce platform. The pitch: merchants with an existing digital presence but no AI capability can convert their web pages, product catalogs, and service workflows directly into "agent-ready skills" and MCP tools — the format AI agents actually understand how to use. Merchants further along can build and manage their own AI agents for tasks like product recommendations and membership programs.

The platform plugs into Ah Bao, Alipay's consumer-facing AI agent, through an interoperability protocol called AHA, and bundles in Alipay's existing payment, identity, risk-management, and fulfillment infrastructure. Retail names including KFC, Mixue Bingcheng, and Luckin Coffee are already live on it, and Alipay says Ah Bao now connects with five smartphone brands covering over 70 percent of the market, plus 16 automakers. Alibaba's stock jumped 5 percent on the news.

The Boring Part Is the Whole Point

What makes this interesting isn't the AI agent — it's the plumbing. Everyone's been racing to build flashy consumer-facing agents; Alipay just shipped the unglamorous middle layer that lets a merchant's existing catalog and checkout flow become something an agent can actually transact against, without a from-scratch rebuild.

That's the part most "AI strategy" conversations skip past. Businesses don't need a chatbot bolted onto their homepage — they need their actual product data, inventory, and workflows structured in a way machines can act on, not just read. That's an integration problem, not a chatbot problem, and it's exactly where most companies' AI ambitions currently stall out.

Agentic commerce is arriving whether your product catalog is ready for it or not.

If you're wondering what it'd take to make your own site's data and workflows legible to AI agents rather than just visitors, that's a conversation worth having with us — let's talk it through.
